Teeth in the mouth are covered with a biofilm, dental plaque. That is first a soft thin layer of bacteria, dead cells and food remains that is deposited on the teeth. Plaque is formed in about 24 hours after the tooth has been cleaned. Dental plaque that is not removed hardens after about 3 days and is no longer easy to remove with a toothbrush. The plaque has then turned into tartar.
Biodent TS is a herbal product
Caries is caused by certain types of bacteria in dental plaque that form acids from sugars in the diet. These bacteria, Streptococcus mutans, Increase in numbers with frequent use of sugar and inadequate oral hygiene. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums. Almost all gingivitis is caused by plaque. Prevention against Caries and gingivitis focuses on the daily removal of plaque by brushing your teeth and flossing.
Biodent TS is a solution of a resin from a tree in alcohol. This formula is used as a carrier of chlorhexidine dental varnishes and this formula has been used in research as a control. Research has shown that the formula of Biodent TS also has an effect against bacteria that cause caries and gingivitis, see Schaeken 1989, Schaeken 1991. Ie 1993 and Pretti et al. 2015. See the graph below for how Biodent TS works. The data comes from the publication Schaeken 1989, Fig 1 and Fig 4.
Schaeken (1989) examined sandarac dental varnish with 0%, 10%, 20% and 40% chlorhexidine. When measured after 1 week, the Biodent TS formula was also found to suppress Streptococcus mutans by more than 99% (From 105.7 to 103.5 Schaeken 1989 Fig. 4). The total number of bacteria in dental plaque reduced the Biodent TS formula by 70% (Before treatment 106.4 and 1 week after treatment 105.9 bacteria, Schaeken 1989 Fig. 1).
The dissolved herbal resin flows into the pores of the tooth surface and then dissolves slowly (Attin et al 2007).
We think it is important that the sandarac formula is applied with a syringe and a (plastic) tip. In research into the effect with sandarac and chlorhexidine where this was not done, no caries reduction was found (De Soet et al. 2002). Research in which the varnish was applied according to the instructions for use did find a reduction in caries (Fennis-Ie et al. 1998).
